Megan on the Issues

Economic Development & Innovation

In Sangamon County, we can't be afraid to think big, think outside the box, and bring new ideas to the table. After decades of lukewarm attempts to energize our economy, we are experiencing a decline in population, particularly for those in prime wage-earning years. If we work together and combine the strengths in our current growth sectors like the health care industry, while establishing a culture of innovation for growing new business, we can accomplish amazing things. The new Land of Lincoln Economic Development Council is a great start for this effort. I will provide effective leadership and oversight on the Sangamon County Board to ensure that this new venture is focused on new pathways to growth in Sangamon County and that there is a seat at the table for a diverse perspective on economic issues.

Renewable Energy

With the passage of the Illinois Future Energy Jobs Act, Sangamon County has the opportunity to be at the forefront of growth in both jobs and renewable energy infrastructure to help meet the Act's goal of 25% of Illinois energy coming from renewables by 2025. We need to ensure that small solar farm projects that are looking for a location view Sangamon County as a viable option.

Community Building & Communication

We must embrace the future and work together to craft, not only the community we want to be, but also a community that others desire to join. This means recognizing our challenges and working together to turn them into opportunities. As your representative on the Sangamon County Board, I won't wait for you to contact me, I will reach out to you with opportunities to engage the issues. I will make sure you know what's going on in District 15 and beyond so that you understand the county-wide impact of issues outside the District, and I will work with you to address your concerns.

Workforce Education

In a survey of local businesses conducted by the UIS Center for Public Policy and Research and the Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce, the availability of skilled workers was listed as one of the top 5 challenges in Sangamon County. In District 15, with both Lincoln Land Community College and the University of Illinois Springfield within our boundaries, we are particularly poised to be a part of the solution. As your Sangamon County Board member, I will work with business, labor, and educational institutions to ensure that we are focused on workforce development that meets the needs of local businesses.
